Google says one reason it may ask you to continue your closed test is insufficient tester engagement during the test, and the production access form asks about it. But what is "engagement", and how do you show it? This guide gives a practical answer. The rules and questions are on Google's testing requirements page. Google does not publish how it measures engagement, so what follows is how to document what actually happened, not a formula.
What the form asks
In the part called About your closed test, Google asks:
- Whether testers used all the available features of your app.
- Whether their usage matched how real production users are expected to behave, with details of any differences.
- A summary of the feedback you received and how you collected it.
So engagement means three things: testers used the app, they used its features, and they told you things you could act on.
Make engagement happen
- Give instructions. Google advises clear instructions on how to test and report bugs, and encourages testers to use as many features as possible.
- Name the features. "Please try login, search and export" works better than "please test the app".
- Provide a feedback channel. Google suggests email, a website or a messaging forum. It also suggests a group where testers can share feedback.
- Remind them. Short messages on day 3, 7 and 12. See the message template.
Document it
Keep one table for the whole test. A simple version:
| Feature | Tried by (number of testers) | Issues found | Fixed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sign in | 14 | 1 | Yes |
| Create a note | 15 | 2 | Yes |
| Search | 11 | 1 | Yes |
| Export | 0 | none | Needs a paid account, not tested |
The last row matters. An honest "nobody tested this" is a better answer than "everything was tested". Pair it with your feedback record.
Describe differences from real users
The second question asks whether testers behaved like real users. Be specific. For example: "Testers used the app a few times a week for short sessions. Real users may use it daily, so we expect more load on search."
What does not count as engagement
Names on a list. A tester who opted in on day 1 and never opened the app has been counted, but they have not engaged. If most of your testers are silent, you will have little to write in the form, and you may be asked to continue testing. See what to do when Google asks for more testing.
How ClosedTest records it
For every plan, testers check in daily with a screenshot, and can add a written note. The final report summarizes the check-ins, the notes, the devices and the findings. You can see the format in the sample report.
