When you recruit testers for a closed test (Google's rule is on its testing requirements page), it helps to know which Android versions they actually carry. We looked at ours. The sample is small, but the pattern is a useful reminder: the newest Android version is not the only one that matters.
The data
These are the ten most common Android versions recorded by ClosedTest's approved testers, as of 26 October 2026. Testers type their version themselves, so the data is self-reported.
| Android version | Testers |
|---|---|
| 11 | 19 |
| 16 | 12 |
| 12 | 7 |
| 13 | 6 |
| 15 | 5 |
| 14 | 5 |
| 10 | 4 |
| 8 | 3 |
| 20 | 2 |
| 26 | 1 |
A data-quality note: "20" and "26" are not Android versions. They are probably typing errors, or an API level entered by mistake (API level 26 corresponds to Android 8). We left them in the table for honesty, and we do not draw conclusions from them.
What stands out
- Android 11 is the most common in this list, with 19 testers, ahead of Android 16 with 12.
- Versions from 8 to 16 all appear. A tester network is not a copy of the newest phones.
- The sample is small (the ten rows cover 64 testers), and it describes our tester network, not all Android users. Do not read it as market share.
What it means for your app
- Test on an older version too. If you only test on the newest Android, you may miss problems that older versions show. Include at least one tester on an older version.
- Know your minimum supported version. Your app declares the lowest Android version it supports. If testers on that version cannot install your app, you will hear about it early.
- Ask testers for their phone model and Android version with each finding. It helps you reproduce problems. Our feedback record template has a column for it.
- Device coverage is part of your story. The production access form asks about your testing, and a report that lists devices and versions is more convincing than "it worked on my phone". See the sample report.
Device and version coverage in ClosedTest reports
Every ClosedTest final report lists the device models and Android versions that were tested. The testing results page shows how many devices and versions each completed run covered.
